After the events of the previous weekend, it's fair to say that the west is truly asleep. Watching Mayo melt down Saturday evening and Galway implode Sunday was cruel for those of desperate to see the powers that be in GAA hurled from their throne. For all the enmity between the two counties (which became manifest at Coppers on Saturday we hear), they sure have a lot in common. But it got us wondering - for people born say after 1983 and can only half-remember Galway's golden decade - is it worse to be a Galway hurling supporter or a Mayo football supporter?
The plight of the Mayo fan is much ballyhoed but there is a bang of curse off of Galway hurlers and the prospect of a hurling title seems frankly impossible as long as Brian Cody rules the roost. Let's start by examining the facts.
Years since last All-Ireland title
Mayo: 64
Galway: 27
All-Ireland finals lost since 1988
Mayo: 7 (1989, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2013)
Galway: 6 (1990, 1993, 2001, 2005, 2012, 2015)
Reason why it's worse to be a Mayo football fan
- Variety of defeats to variety of opponents in All-Ireland finals
- Never-say-die attitude of team consistently on display, which makes inevitable defeat even more inexplicable
- Horribly patronising attitude adopted by most of the county towards the county, especially those counties who have enjoyed even a morsel of intercounty success
- County's (and media's) frenzied obsession with All-Ireland win seems to somehow work against team's All-Ireland efforts.
- Gutpunching nature of most All-Ireland defeats
- Vaguely plausible possibility that the curse is real
Reasons why it's worse to be a Galway hurling fan
- The many years of mediocrity that always follow the inevitable All-Ireland defeat
- Permanent greatness of Kilkenny and realisation that Brian Cody will soon be managing the sons of DJ, Shefflin et al to All-Ireland's
- Paralysing fear that it's Joe Canning's fate to be the best hurler to never to win the All-Ireland
- Regular success of county at minor and U-21 level makes fallow years even more mystifying.
Those things keep things more or less level, but as far as we can see there are two things that make it preferable to be from Galway and they are:
- Galway football wins in '98 and '01 count for something
- Better travel infrastructure to and from Galway means less time in cars home from Dubiln pondering the futility of it all.
Should Galway lose the All-Ireland next year, we may revisit this poll.
