Liverpool comfortably pushed past Manchester United to claim their place in the last 8 of the Europa League on Thursday night, and the display put in by Manchester United over two-legs will only heap more pressure on Louis Van Gaal as the season nears its end.

Paul Scholes has become notorious for lashing out at United in recent times after they have failed to deliver in Europe, but he was far more relaxed in the BT Sport studio as he dissected the performance of Van Gaal's side with Steve McManaman and Paul Ince.

Scholes' main concern was with the quality of players at United's disposal, and he couldn't help but rue the sale of Danny Welbeck in particular:

I end up every time I watch United, I keep thinking of the players that have been allowed to leave the club.

And you're just scratching your head. I think Welbeck is the big example of someone who should never have been allowed to leave the club. He's a big example of what Manchester United are, he was here since 9 years of age, come right through to the first team, he's quick, he's strong, can score a goal can make a goal, can play left wing can play right wing or centre forward, he's walk into this team now.

Without a shadow of a doubt, and he's just been allowed to go.

McManaman then pointed out the likes of Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans, who also were allowed to walk, as reasons for how poorly the club is being run.

It certainly is a frustrating time for Manchester United fans.
