The fate of Victor Valdes over the past couple of years has long been one of football's great mysteries. Why was he so keen to leave Barcelona, why did he select Man United when it was clear he wasn't going to be number one and, above all, what happened behind the scenes that made Louis van Gaal so publicly denigrate one of the world's best goalkeepers?
We'll probably never know the full truth about the scenario that has ensured Valdes is now a footnote in the grand scheme of the football world. But at least it looks like this will finally be the transfer window which sees the Spanish stopper leave Old Trafford.
A loan to the slightly understated surroundings of Standard Liege is all set and the only things left for it is a nice note to be left for Man United fans.
Louis van Gaal may not be a fan but he does seem like a lovely chap. The Belgian league may not be where he had anticipated finding himself when he left Barcelona in 2014 but that's where he is and Man United fans will inevitably wish him all the best after a tumultuous couple of years.
Although, he'll only be heading out on loan to Standard Liege, it will bring about an end to his Man United career given that his 18 month contract expires this summer.
