It's a curious thing social media. Even five or ten years ago if a woman was pictured taking a shirt off a child at a football game it might cause some quick questioning but then everyone would soon remember there was a play-off final on and it would never be thought of again.
For better or worse, that's not the case anymore. Preston's 4-0 win over Swindon has been resoundingly overshadowed by Vickie Timbrell taking Jermaine Beckford's shirt from a young boy. To say Timbrell has been vilified is putting it very kindly.
The 31 year old from Manchester has been the subject of a collective hatred that's rarely seen. Yesterday, the young boy's family had their say on the incident and confirmed what many had suspected. It wasn't a simple misunderstanding, the woman in question had taken the shirt against the child's wishes and there was definitely something untoward going on.
As you might expect, the search was on for Timbrell and she was found by the Manchester Evening News to whom she gave a brief statement.
People have made me out to be an absolute idiot. I will be speaking to the family, I actually know them, they're friends.
According to the Daily Mail, Timbrell also took to Facebook to thank her supporters and explain that this may not be the last we've heard of it.
Can I just say thank you to everyone for all the support and texts. I'm not commenting on the crap they've written because I'm taking this further. It's all wrong and twisted. My side of the story will soon come out.
Very classy and dignified stuff altogether.
