Well, that escalated quickly.
It was very clear by the actions of the West Ham fans before the game that tonight's match was different. The final game at Upton Park was always going to be an emotional occasion, and sure enough, the drama that unfolded was enough to leave every employee of Sky Sports with an erection that may never subside.
West Ham flew out of the traps, and could well have been 4-0 at half-time were it not for some comical finishing, but after half-time and the introduction of Michael Carrick, Manchester United awoke.
After clawing back into it and then taking the lead, it looked as though the Champions League was within touching distance, and then at the 20th and 21st time of asking West Ham's big defenders rose higher than Man Utd's midfielders playing in defence to dash they dreams and send the crowd into raptures.
Here's how twitter reacted to an insane 90 minutes.
Great way to bow out the stadium for West Ham.

We gave West Ham 3 points as a fair well, United are a class club. This is what football is all about. #Respect

Still want LVG for another season you LVG in C**ts !? FFS we should have lost 5-2 or 6-2. We had TWO shots on target!. Lucky we got 2 goals

If Van Gaal is still at United next season, I'll legit watch Rugby for a season instead. #MUFC

Dear Man City. You're welcome. Sincerely, West Ham.

Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj sent on to save the day. Hilarious. Bye bye Van Gaal.

Gutting for @ManUtd , so dissappointing. but what a way to sign off for the hammers, sensational from the fans inside that great stadium.

5th place finish. Irrespective of what happens in the FA cup now, thankfully we don't have to endure another season of LVG's torture.

Slavan is in tears....what a man!!! What a manager...and what a result! COYI!!!
— West Ham United Fans (@whufcsupporters) May 10, 2016
Must win game and we had what 3 shots on target if that? LVG has to go
— Olly (@11Utd) May 10, 2016
Pathetic and spineless. That's what LvG is all about.
— Busby MUFC (@BusbyMUFC) May 10, 2016
Congrats to west ham on winning the league tonight ?

For Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal... Amazing how 2 goals in 4 minutes could change the destiny of one of Europe's super clubs.
— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) May 10, 2016
A chance to please the fans, a chance to salvage what has been a dreadful season, and they don't turn up. No motivation under LVG.
— Jordan (@FourFourJordan) May 10, 2016
Giggs telling #mufc players to go over to the fans. Rojo made a quick enough getaway he's already in the dressing room.
— Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) May 10, 2016
Unless there's the most ridiculous goal difference swing imaginable, a point will guarantee #mcfc fourth on Sunday #mufc
— James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker) May 10, 2016
Another spineless & dreadful display to symbolise the Louis van Gaal era at #MUFC. Thrown a lifeline, and just not good enough to take it.
— Sam Pilger (@sampilger) May 10, 2016
Look lads it’s grand the Europa is serious craic now anyway. It’s like getting refused from Everleigh and going to Copper’s. #MUFC
— Rick Nash (@AMTRick) May 10, 2016
However, Martial is going to be a very special player for us, absolutely no question. Amazing potential & world class #mufc
