Five years ago, Tipperary ran up seven goals against Waterford in a Munster Final winning in the end by 21 points. Tipp were reigning All-Ireland champions and the Waterford team of the noughties were thought to have reached the end of their cycle. It was a grim and horrible day for Waterford. John Mullane apologised to their supporters afterwards. And not for the first time either.

Five years on, Waterford have undergone a radical transformation, uncovered a new crop of youngsters and evolved a watertight defensive gameplan which has confounded so many opponents in League and championship in 2015 and 2016. Tipp, meanwhile, hadn't exactly gone into retreat but nor had they kicked on and firmly established themselves as the equals of Kilkenny.

And the result of Sunday's match - Tipp beat Waterford in the Munster Final by 21 points again. For those hungry for variety at the summit of hurling, it was a demoralising afternoon.

Unsurprisingly, Tipp provide the hurler of the weekend as voted for by you the reader. John McGrath bagged a hat-trick and was hardly going to be denied. Waterford's carefully programmed defensive system was wrecked in an afternoon, after McGrath, in particular, delighted in ripping and pulling out the circuitry.

He hogged the vast majority of Tipp-friendly votes to the detriment of Michael Breen, who pulled in only 12% of the vote.

Elsewhere, the hurling championship has been whittled down to six.

Cork and Limerick, both of whom were wheezing and spluttering already, were slung out on their ear. Though the former's exit at the hands of a little heralded Wexford team was a mild surprise.

The inspirational Lee Chin, he of the unorthodox schoolyard Irish post-match speeches, was chief among their stars, garnering 32% of the vote.

Podge Collins, Clare's man of the match in the victory over Limerick, finished in third place in the poll with 18% of the vote.
