WWE's Shane McMahon is an enduring figure of the the sports entertainment industry and has been for the last 20 years. Both as a wrestler and an on-screen personality, followers of the WWE/WWF are familiar with his work.

His "death defying" leaps from tall structures have been his calling card. The son of WWE owner Vince McMahon has certainly never let it be said he won't put his body on the line for his dad's company.

And while much of the entertainment produced by the WWE is simulated, McMahon found himself in some very real danger on Wednesday.

The Smackdown Live commissioner and his helicopter pilot, Mario Regtien, were forced to make an emergency landing in the Atlantic Ocean. The pair went down off the coast of Long Island in New York.

Neither of the men were reported injured. Speaking after the crash, the 47-year-old described the experience as unnerving.

Well, it's very unsettling when all of the sudden you have something happen

You hear a bang and then you start to say, 'we're going to do an emergency landing in the water.' Yes, it was very unnerving.

We were just coming in for an emergency landing. I said OK. He said here in the water. I said all right. He deployed the pontoons and everything happened so quickly you don't have time to react.

But the pilot Mario was fantastic. When he landed it was like landing on the ground. He did an amazing job.

The cause of the crash was not discussed publicly. The aircraft left from Westchester County Airport and sent out a mayday signal before landing.  The pair were rescued after a flight heading to JFK International Airport notified controllers of the crash.
Unbelievably, while talking to press about his ordeal, one reporter's question to him was a little strange, not to mention a little callous.

"Are you Vince McMahon's son?"

There's the ego boost you need after surviving a helicopter crash.
