Over 450 riders arrived in Rostrevor, Co Down in a bid to compete in the 2017 Red Bull Foxhunt yesterday. The Foxhunt is a race designed to have a bunch of mountain-biking lunatics compete in a 'mass run' to try to outrun 3 elite 'foxes' through the marshy hills and trees.
In one of the most thrilling downhill races in Europe, the foxes to catch were two-time downhill World Champion Gee Atherton, current World Champion Loic Bruni and last year’s winner, Colin Ross.
In a pulsating 3 and a half mile downhill sprint through the treacherous forest trail, it was Kelan Grant from Co. Tyrone that was first to pass the post and take home the 2017 title.
Grant, an Enduro rider and current Irish champion, took a comfortable win, cruising to victory having done the hard work early on in the climb from the opening field to the top of the main downhill.
In a record attendance, riders from Australia, Poland, France, Denmark and Spain joined the core of Irish and British male and female riders in a packed spectacle. The Red Bull Foxhunt has been growing year in year out since 2011, and will now be held in several countries throughout the world including Wales and Denmark.
