Liverpool announced their first signing of the summer in James Milner's free transfer from Manchester City, subject to a medical. It's rumoured that Milner will become one of Liverpool's highest paid players, and despite it being a free transfer - the reaction to the move on twitter has been decidedly split.
Here's how most of the Liverpool fans reacted, starting with the most optimistic:
Milner on a free, Origi to finally arrive and sounds like Ings on a relatively cheap tribunal deal. Not bad #LFC, not bad at all.

Versatility was a big key word:
Top signing for Liverpool that is. Big fan of Milner; versatile and underrated.

#Milner is a sound signing for #LFC. Technically good, versatile, excellent attitude. Any manager would want him in his squad.

Jay Bothroyd echoed Jamie Carragher's opinion that Milner is a candidate to take over from Steven Gerrard as captain straight away:
If I were manager I'd make Milner captain of Liverpool no way is Henderson captain material in my opinion ?

While others made pre-emptive arguments:
While the tone of this tweet is both optimistic and defeated at the same time:
13 - James Milner has lost 13 Premier League games against Liverpool; three more than against any other side. Adversaries.

Needless to say, other fans weren't so complimentary about Liverpool's signing, targeting his wages:
Milner could've been a good squad addition. But no-brainer #AFC turned him down when wanted same £ terms as Özil/Alexis - both world class.

Or focusing on the lack of league winners in the Liverpool squad:
While Manchester United fans also seemed very happy that Milner had signed for Liverpool:
James Milner sign for Liverpool. Another mediocre player signing for a mediocre club. 🐸☕️

I'm absolutely pissing myself laughing at my Liverpool fan cousin who claims Milner is better than Depay 😂😂😂#banter

BREAKING - LIVERPOOL ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THEY ARE READY TO DESTROY MILNER'S CAREER.
SUBJECT TO MEDICAL OF COURSE— The United Link 🏆 (@TheUnitedLink) June 4, 2015
If James Milner was any other nationality, he would be off playing at a smalltime club. But he's English, so gets a move to Liverpool.
