Speaking on BBC Radio yesterday evening, Graham Hunter revealed that Real Madrid are so tied up in knots at the moment that they decided it was a good idea to go about approaching Pep Guardiola to see if he'd be interested in taking over the reigns at the Bernabeu in the near future.
As Hunter himself said;
It says something about Madrid that they could get it so wrong, that one of the great anti-Madridistas was approached by them.
But while a move to Madrid is never going to happen, something that is now certain to happen is that Guardiola will be managing in the Premier League next season. While it had been widely speculated for months now, the Bayern Munich coach has today, for the first time, said the words to make Premier League fans sit up and take notice.
The reason I have not extended my contract is simple. I want to manage in the Premier League.
I want to experience the atmosphere in England and look forward to the stadiums there. I am 44 and it is the right time to go there.
The League may be set in stone but the club is not according to Guardiola who went on to confirm that he is yet to decide on his next club. Man City have long been the most likely destination, however, recent developments are sure to put a bit of a spanner in the works.
You can be certain that Chelsea have either already made their play for the 44 year old or are currently in the process of doing so. City remain the favourites but there's going to be quite the tug of war over the next couple of weeks and months.
As for Man United, it's anyone's guess. You would have to think that Ed Woodward and co. would be doing everything they could to convince Guardiola to take charge at Old Trafford but, as things stand, it looks like Louis van Gaal may survive for the rest of this season at least with Ryan Giggs or Jose Mourinho his likely successor.
One way or another, the Premier League is going to be an even more interesting place next season thanks to Guardiola's arrival.
