Irish boxer Matthew Macklin has announced his retirement from boxing this morning. Macklin was 35-6 and fought many of the biggest names in the middleweight division during his career, including Felix Sturm and Gennady Golovkin.
His fight against future trainer Jamie Moore was one of the most exciting this century.
Matthew Macklin retires. Ends on a run of 4 wins. Came closest to being world champion when losing a bad decision to Felix Sturm in Cologne

Two years ago, Macklin came up against a rising comet in the name of Gennady Golovkin and suffered a third round knockout after a clinical kidney punch.
Macklin's retirement means we will never see the much-hyped Andy Lee-Matthew Macklin fight that seemed inevitable a few years ago. It certainly would have been the most exciting Irish boxing fight in recent years but, sadly, it is not to be.
