Ring-wing website Breitbart need to improve on their knowledge of German football.
On Friday, the website published a piece about Spanish Police stopping a gang bringing migrants from Morocco to Spain for €5,000 each.
The website used a picture of German World Cup winner Lukas Podolski on a jet-ski in the article. Whether Breitbart at the time assumed that Podolski was migrant, gang member or jet-ski user remains unknown.
Once Breitbart's mistake was made known on Twitter, the website were quick to apologise to the former Arsenal striker.
A previous version of this story included an image of Lukas Podolski on a jet ski. This image appeared as an illustration of a person on a jet ski. Breitbart London wishes to apologise to Mr. Podolski. There is no evidence Mr. Podolski is either a migrant gang member, nor being human trafficked. We wish Mr. Podolski well in his recently announced international retirement.
It's not the first time in recent years that a Germany international has been inadvertently linked with the political right-wing. In 2015, a Chinese toy company released a Nazi doll named Bastian, that had more than a passing resemblance to Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Lukas Podolski (who is now playing in Japan with Vissel Kobe) has yet to comment on the Breitbart article, or the hastily written apology.
