The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, last night announced that Ireland fans are to be awarded the Medal of the City of Paris (la médaille de la Ville de Paris) for their sportsmanship and passion throughout Euro 2016.
Hidalgo said: "these supporters have been exemplary in their sportsmanship" and she further went on to praise the "atmosphere" Irish fans created since the beginning of Euros.
Hidalgo stated that she had written to President Michael D. Higgins to inform him of the news.
It seems likely that President Higgins will travel to Paris at an unspecified date to receive the honour on behalf of the Irish fans.
The Mayor of Paris is to give the Medal of Paris to the Irish supporters. That's a nice touch!
