The Irish Independent have another story regarding doping and the GAA today, as urine samples taken from GAA players were lost by couriers on two separate occasions while en route to a World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Germany.
Anti-doping officials from Sport Ireland launched an investigation into the matter in June, and have written to the GAA to inform them of the investigation.
The most recent incident arose as urine samples from three members of the Westmeath hurling panel did not arrive at the WADA-accredited lab in Cologne for testing last month. In July 2016, samples from three Fermanagh footballers also failed to turn up at the lab, as they were lost in transit by the courier company.
A spokesperson for Sport Ireland told the Irish Independent:
Sport Ireland uses [the courier company] on average in excess of 1,500 times a year and as such occurrences such as this, while very serious, are extremely rare.
