A late goal from James Tarkowski snatched a point for Everton in a chaotic Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The centre half levelled the game up in the eight minute of injury-time with a stunning volley before both Curtis Jones and Arne Slot were sent off as tempers boiled over after the final whistle, with Everton's resurgence continuing under David Moyes.

Everton's Abdoulaye Doucouré was also red carded in the schemozzle that saw players from both sides square up, as the atmosphere on Merseyside reached fever pitch.

Security guards rushed on in a bid to cool the tension pitch-side as emotions ran high in this feistiest of derby clashes.

Michael Oliver brandished all three red cards after the final whistle, with Jones confronting Doucouré as the midfielder appeared to taunt the Liverpool fans in the away end. Arne Slot was then shown a red card after an interaction with the referee moments later.

Jones was visibly furious with Doucouré and speaking on TNT Sport, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said he could understand why the red mist descended on the Liverpool midfielder.

"I tell you what I've been there," Ferdinand said.

"(I remember) Balotelli at Wembley doing that to our fans, I was incensed and I can understand Curtis Jones there, you don't want to see anyone creating a storm like that but I understand his feelings when you see someone going up to your fans giving it to them.

"You don't want to see that but Curtis Jones seen Doucouré go to his fans in that away section there and start giving it to them and he wasn't happy."

The Toffees took the lead early on through Beto but Alexis MacAllister struck back for Liverpool on the stroke of half-time.

Mo Salah edged Liverpool in front in the 73rd minute as his free-scoring form continued only for Tarkowski's late intervention for the home side.

Afterwards, Moyes described the game as 'a bit of a throwback.'

“It wasn’t the best or cleanest football you’ll watch, but it was a bit of a throwback,' he told TNT.
