With the buzz generated from the GTA VI trailer still in the air, we are concluding our GTA week with a look back at some of the game's best references to Ireland.

Often forgotten is that GTA is a Scottish made game developed by Rockstar North in Dundee, and thus they probably have a more authentic understanding of Irish culture than American developers.

Over the years there have been a number of nods to Ireland, with characters, place signs, and a reference to Ireland's favourite show among them.

Northern Irish Tramps In GTA III

The third game in the main series was the most ground breaking of all GTA games, being the first to move to 3D and the first to receive serious critical acclaim.

In the Liberty City set game, a foul mouthed, Northern Irish female tramp can be found, sounding off with such catch phrases as 'SMELL YOUR MA!', 'Aw, you look like my daughter', 'I smell of piss', and 'any booze going?'

Also, in the fantastic GTA IV DLC, The Ballad of Gay Tony, there is a mission that involves threatening a Northern Irish blogger who has overstepped the line.

Random Signs From Ireland

Recommended

GTA V features some excellent Irish signage, with a sign for Dublin found in a Los Santos bar, featuring the full Irish 'Baile Atha Cliath' translation as well.

A more specific and random sign for Tallaght, of all places, can found in a motorcycle club in the same game.

GTA IV also features Irish/English road signs for Dublin, Cork, and Galway, that can be found in the Irish pubs: Steinway Beer Garden, and Lucky Winkles.

Father Ted Reference

The third episode of the first series of Father Ted features one of the show's most iconic scenes, with Ted and Dougal protesting outside the cinema over a blasphemous film being shown, with signs saying 'Down With This Sort Of Thing' and 'Careful Now'.

The scene was recreated in GTA V and in GTA: Chinatown Wars, with protestors seen holding signs with the same slogans.

The McReary Crime Family

The second-generation Irish-American family play a huge role in the story of GTA IV, and become close allies of protagonist Niko Bellic.

One brother, Derrick McReary, is revealed to be a former member of the Provisional IRA, while Packie McReary also features in GTA V.

From GTA Wiki:

"The gang can be seen in Steinway, Dukes, but used to have influence in Purgatory, Algonquin. Members of the gang wear casual clothes, sometimes with green color or Irish symbolism, and some have ginger hair, since the crime family is Irish. They drive modified Übermacht Oracles and green Contenders."

In one of the great GTA missions, Niko must make a choice whether to kill Derrick or his corrupt policeman brother Francis.
