Unlike Gerald McCarthy and Justin McCarthy, Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes chose not to prolong the managerial wrangle in Mayo by resigning last night.
Their statement was widely praised and many expressed sympathy for the pair online, though the decision to resign is surely the right one. Digging in one's heels in defiance of the players only makes sense if you're a fanatical adherent to the cult of the manager.
GAA players and pundits have been giving their reaction to the decision of the pair to stand down...
Was in the trenches with both but 2nite they took bullet 4 pride of their County..Deep rooted Mayo men who should be respected by ALL

Those from a county with close proximity to Mayo shouldn't indulge in schadenfreude. They almost had their own player revolt last week. #GAA

On a human level it's Very hard not to feel sorry for Holmes and Connelly... but they did the right thing

The Players did the right thing too though, that shouldn't be forgotten

Connolly & Holmes leave with a bit of class. This whole Mayo drama has been handled with all the discretion of a fire alarm. #mayogaa

Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly have made it easy for Mayo GAA. History shows how messy these situations can be. Right decision.

Corofin All-Ireland winning manger Stephen Rochford favourite for Mayo job. Would lead to plenty of Rochford Files headlines, anyhow.
