We've had the no make-up selfie and the ice bucket challenge. And now the online fundraising revolution has been reinvented again to produce the Score 4 Eddie initiative for a hurler who is battling cancer.
29 year-old Eddie Connolly from Tipperary was first diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013 and is still receiving extensive treatment. He took part in the inaugural Professor Hollywood Memorial Cup last year which consisted of two Gaelic Football teams made up of players who have all suffered from cancer.
And as a gesture to Connolly, the players from that tournament have started the Score 4 Eddie fundraising campaign. The concept involves someone videoing themselves scoring a goal in their preferred sport as well as texting SCORE 4 EDDIE to 50300 to donate €4. You then post the video online and tag your nominations to take up the challenge within 24 hours.
The Score 4 Eddie Facebook page has currently accumulated over 1,400 likes.
All donations go to the Eddie Connolly trust fund and half is donated to St James and St Lukes hospitals. The Eddie Connolly Trust is also hosting a fundraising event on Friday September 18.
From the Loughmore-Castleiney, Eddie has represented his county at all grades and even captained the Intermediate team to an All-Ireland title in 2012.
Since receiving the diagnosis, Connolly made a remarkable return and helped Loughmore-Castleiney book their place in the county senior hurling final. Presently he is undergoing a new form of cancer treatment in Spain.
