With some Manchester United fans choosing to voice their frustrations with Marouane Fellaini last weekend, we thought it was worth pointing out that he is not the only player to be subject to that treatment this season.
Be it at club or international level, the following players have taken some very audible stick from the folks that turn up to see them try and succeed.
Some of it is totally uncalled for, some of it is.. Well, called for. Here are seven players who have been booed by their own fans this season, and the reasons behind it.
Marouane Fellaini - Manchester United
Reason: Gave a late and very stupid penalty away that cost a win.
The inspiration for this list, the situation against Tottenham was an embarrassment for the vast majority of the club's supporters. A Man Utd fan who thinks Fellaini is a good player to have at the club is rare, but at the same time, there is a line, and to boo a player for giving away a penalty, even if he is a clumsy oaf who has done it before and will do it again, is just moronic.
Julian Draxler - Wolfsburg
Reason: Doesn't give a shit about the club, openly wants to leave.
If Fellaini did not deserve to be booed, then Draxler definitely did. The German attacking midfielder is exactly the type of player that ex-pros and pundits complain about being a product of the game going "too soft".
Draxler left Schalke because he didn't want the pressure of being the team's best player, and he wanted to play Champions League football. However, he didn't really enjoy his first season with Wolfsburg, and asked to leave the club in the summer. When that request was rejected, he did what all great pros do.. Sulk and half-arse it.
The World Cup winner has been awful when used by Wolfsburg this season, and the fans have let him know that they won't accept his total lack of care.
Mauro Icardi - Inter Milan
Reason: Feud with the club's Ultras over fabricated story in his book.
A very strange spat took place between Inter's club captain Icardi and the surprisingly powerful ultras that support the club and occupy the famous Curva Nord in the San Siro.
Icardi was critical of the supporters group in his book which was published this year, as he claimed that after he gave his jersey to a little boy in the stands following a loss, an ultra ripped it from the boy and threw it back at him. The Ultras claimed this never happened, and took it as an insult, releasing a statement demanding that Icardi be stripped of the captaincy.
The club stood by Icardi, but the ultras booed him and have staged numerous protests over the team in general in recent weeks.
Lazar Markovic - Sporting Lisbon
Reason: Poor performances, judged to not be committed to the club.
When Borussia Dortmund defeated Sporting away in a Champions League group game back in October, Markovic was made the scapegoat as he was substituted after a poor display which was by no means his first this season.
He's still on loan from Liverpool, and it looks a mutual agreement that the move will not be made permanent. What Jurgen Klopp does with the Serbian upon his return remains to be seen.
Wayne Rooney - England
Reason: Poor performances.
Right before he went on the piss-up that seemed to restore his ability to play football at an acceptable level, the criticism of Rooney's form reached tipping point as he was booed after a woeful shot against Malta in a game that was won 2-0.
It, like Fellaini above, was uncalled for. Rooney is England's all-time leading goalscorer, but he was judged to be not-good-enough by an audible section of the crowd following rumblings that his place in the side was costing younger English players valueable playing time.
In response, Rooney had a few too many drinks in the hotel which started a whole other shitstorm, but he's playing much better lately, so things appear to be fine.
Siem De Jong - PSV Eindhoven
Reason: Used to captain Ajax, isn't staying on past his loan.
PSV fans were not happy when it was confirmed that Siem De Jong would be taking a break from his Newcastle nightmare to return to Holland and play for their club, because he was a former Ajax captain.
Upon entering the pitch early in the season, De Jong was booed by the home fans, and while it no longer continues, there doesn't seem to be any sort of relationship between player and fans as it is known that he will not be at the club past this season.
Romelu Lukaku - Belgium
Reason: Missed a sitter against Bosnia & Herzegovina, one miss too many.
Easily the most ridiculous in this list, Lukaku was booed for missing an open goal with Belgium already 3-0 up in the match... Which he would then go on to score the 4th goal in.
At the time the big Belgian was struggling for Everton, and had missed some glorious chances while on international duty, but the reaction from the fans saw manager Marc Wilmots voice his displeasure.
