Adidas have launched a seriously tempting remake of probably the most popular football boot ever created this week as they unveiled the Adidas Copa Mundial SL 2016.
And they are bloody gorgeous:
A great shout from the idea men at Adidas, while some will harp on about a lack of creativity, and following a similar trend seen in Hollywood of just doing re-boots for the obvious financial reasons, the Copa Mundial SL represents something that is much needed in modern football; And old-school looking boot with new-school technology behind it.
The traditional Copa Mundials with their thick leather and large tongue are not everybody's cup of tea, but the simple design of the boot, the no-nonsense black with white stripes, are exactly what a lot of players want. So now we have a best of both worlds situation.
Here are 10 other pairs of old boots that would absolutely fly off the shelves if they were updated and re-released:
Note: We didn't include the Predator Mania or Accelorator, nor the 'R9' Nike Vapors as they have already been re-released.
'06 Mercurial Vapor
It's flashy, but not obnoxiously so. The clean white with a yellow fade was one of the most popular options at the 2006 World Cup, and 10 years on, the Vapors are only available in bright red or green colourways.
Adidas Predator Powerswerve
Probably the most underrated Predator ever released, the design was beautiful, the tongue strap was solid, and the boots were a dream to wear.
Original Adidas F50
The biggest problem with these beauties was that if mud got inside the texture surrounding the heel and on the sides, then it was a nightmare to get out. Now, with so many playing on Astro pitches, that would be far less of a problem.
Del Piero made these bad boys iconic.
Puma v1.06
A magnificent speed boot that was again available in many colours without being too loud, the 1.06 Puma's were fantastic. The green grass camouflage was also a very popular boot.
Nike Air Zoom Total 90 II
Just sublime.
This colourway on the Nike Tiempo boot would be bliss.
Umbro Elite X
Michael Owen and Alan Shearer used to bang goals in with these boots, and the k-leather was ridiculously soft. A home run from Umbro.
Adidas F50 Spider
What more needs to be said? Stunning boots.
