While Avengers: Endgame provided so many memorable moments, there were only a select few that actually made the audience applaud in the theatre. And of those, the first was undoubtedly when Captain America picked up Thor's hammer to deal a number of blows to Thanos. But surely that's not possible? How was Captain America able to pick up Thor's hammer all of a sudden? We explain below.
How was Captain America able to pick up Thor's hammer?
Thor's hammer 'Mjolnir' is one of the most famous weapons in the Marvel Universe and while the God of Thunder is able to throw it around like piece of cultery, for practically everyone else it has proved impossible to budge.
However, the key word here is 'almost.' The inscription on the side of the hammer reads "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” Basically only those who the hammer deems worthy are able to hoist it.
In Avengers: Age of Ultron we see Captain America try to lift the hammer but he can barely get off the ground. Although, to be fair, that's more than everyone else could do except for Vision. In a funny scene from the movie, Vision coolly hands the hammer to Thor before leaving the room.
Fast forward to Avengers: Endgame and Thor is in a bit of a pickle while battling Thanos. Just as the big bad baddie is about to sink his blade into Thor's heart, who appears out of nowhere only Captain America! The hammer has finally decided that he is worthy.
Why was he not able to wield it before now? One argument was that he was keeping the fact Bucky killed Tony Stark's parents a secret may have stood against him but ... and I'm sorry for ruining the allusion ... it's probably just that the writers were saving this moment for the climactic movie.
