Wolfe Tones Star Says Band Would Go To Eurovision If Israel Were Banned From Event

When it comes to Ireland's recent record at Eurovision, it's fair to say that we have massively underachieved.  Once the undoubted kingpins of the competition, Ireland have failed to qualify for from the semi-finals in eight of the last nine editions.

That is largely our own doing. We continue to send bland and forgettable songs year after year, each time producing predictable results.

One of the tweaks we have suggested going forward is that instead of sending poor quality pop songs, we should consider an entry that is quintessentially Irish.

Who fits that bill better than the Wolfe Tones?

Wolfe Tones would be interested in representing Ireland at Eurovision

The Wolfe Tones have experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity over the last couple of years, something that had led to sold out arena gigs in both Dublin and Belfast at the end of 2024.

They are the type of act Ireland should be looking at sending to Eurovision, with the band admitting they would be interested under one condition.

Speaking on Cork ’s 96FM, Wolfe Tones frontman Brian Warfield said the band would be interested in representing Ireland at the Eurovision, as long as Israel were not participating in the competition. If the Israelis do compete, he would prefer Ireland to pull out altogether.

I think RTE should pull out. We have been very lax about letting the world know that we don’t like what’s going on out there. It’s genocide in Gaza. The way to do it is to boycott things involving Israel.

They are the perpetrators of the genocide in Gaza and the West Bank. It’s disgraceful. I lose sleep over it. I can’t help but think about the little children being killed and maimed. No one is crying, ‘Stop’. I call on Ireland to boycott Eurovision. And I make that as strongly as I possibly can.

We should not involve ourselves or interact with a Government and a country that is carrying out genocide against another people. It’s heartbreaking for Irish people.

We know they are suffering because of the suffering that we went through in our history. We are very close to other people who suffer like we suffered over the years.

We have to stop Israel being at Eurovision...

Ireland has done very badly in Eurovision over the years and I think it all started with Dustin the Turkey [in 2008].

We’d do a better job than that, but I don’t think RTE is going to choose the Wolfe Tones. I’m writing new songs all the time.

This year's Eurovision will be held in Malmo at the start of May, with Ireland's entry to the competition set to be selected over the coming weeks.

While the Wolfe Tones would be an unlikely selection, they would no doubt be a very popular one among the public.
