After Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney (remember his Batman film?), Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck got to wear the cape and cowl in feature-length films, it's now Robert Pattinson's chance to play The Dark Knight and we're liking the look of the first trailer.

In terms of the aesthetic, it appears that Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield, Let Me In) is definitely taking a darker approach to the character with some very strong noir and mystery vibes throughout.

Having seen it, we were instantly reminded of David Fincher's Se7en, which isn't exactly a bad thing.

In terms of the supporting cast, it's fair to say that Batman/Bruce Wayne is going to have his work cut out because the cast in The Batman is incredible, especially the villains.

Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Paul Dano (The Riddler), John Turturro (Carmine Falcone), and Colin Farrell (The Penguin) will all feature in the film as Batman faces a very tong rogues gallery.

Elsewhere, Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon) and Andy Serkis (Alfred) will be on hand to help Gotham's most famous crimefighter.

Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál also star.

What's even more surprising is that Barry Keoghan will also feature in Matt Reeves' film, a piece of casting information that was kept quiet up until now.

As for Pattinson, by the end of the trailer, you'll be itching to see more of what he can do with the character. Meanwhile, Farrell looks unrecognisable as he transforms into Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin.

Let's just say that the criminals in Gotham better be on their guard.
