It's fair to say that The Simpsons lost its edge quite some time ago. While the show was at the cutting edge of comedy early in its run, the magic quickly started to run out.
It's absolutely remarkable that it's still going, with the Matt Groening creation currently in the midst of its 31st season.
While the vast majority won't have purposely tuned into a new episode for quite some time, the launch of Disney+ has allowed us to bask in some of its former glories. The entire back catalogue of episodes is on the streaming site.
Today, they also dropped a brand new animated short.
Now we know what you're thinking, that any new Simpsons material is probably crap. You'd usually be right, but this is actually not the worst.
Playdate With Destiny is certainly very different from what you would expect to see from The Simpsons. Seemingly inspired by Fox's recent merger with Disney, the five-minute short is very much inspired by what you would see in similar efforts from Pixar.
It tells the story of Maggie meeting a new child at a playground, a bit of a toddler love story. When they go home at the end of the day, she is desperate to find him once again.
It actually features no dialogue and is a well put together animation. Definitely worth watching if you already have a subscription to Disney+.
