Yesterday's funeral of Shane MacGowan was an unequivocal success, with its musical performances, and all round vibe perfectly encapsulating and celebrating the life of the famed artist.
A rendition of 'A Rainy Night In Soho' from Nick Cave, and a cover of 'The Parting Glass' sung by MacGowan's old Pogues bandmate Spider Stacy, made for poignant scenes.
The most talked about moment, however, came during the playing of 'Fairytale of New York', when members of MacGowan's family and other funeral goers made their way over the church pews and began dancing in front of the band.
The scenes captured the hearts of many around the world, who were in awe of this most Irish ceremony.

Watching Shane Macgowan’s funeral mass it strikes me that while the old faith has its faults and its critics and often rightly so…..a good Catholic funeral mass still has a magnificent majesty which stirs the soul.

That’s it.
After the vid of Shane MacGowan’s funeral, I’ve settled on a philosophy of life-
“Leave happiness in your wake.”
Simple enough, and a legacy worth leaving.— Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) December 8, 2023

"I loved his presence and I loved his smile and I loved his voice," his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, said in her eulogy.
"And I love the fact that 50 times a day we would laugh at each other and smile with each other and say I love you to each other.
"And we used to say 'I'm so glad to see you' and like we said that even though we'd been in the room together all day, we'd still say 'I'm so glad to see you'.
"I've never met anyone with so much love, admiration and respect for his own family."
