What is Christmas about if not for countless of mindnumbing hours rooted to the coach as you cradle a tin of Roses? With boundless choices but limited time, we've stepped in to mark your card as to some of the offerings you can't afford to miss this Christmas Eve.
The Guard - RTE 2, 22.25pm
A classic fish-out-of-water comedy with a uniquely Irish twist. The brother of In Bruges director Martin McDonagh takes Brendan Gleeson for this hilarious depiction of a Garda in rural Ireland. It is perfect Christmas viewing, albeit it not for the entire family. Gleeson is brilliant while Mark Strong is one of the great film villains.
A Christmas Carol - BBC One, 9.00 pm
Firstly, this is the third of a three-part series of the classic Christmas tale adapted by the BBC. You really do have to watch the first two parts before the final third, but it is worth it.
The BBC's "big drama production” has earned mixed reviews and if you are a traditionalist who would rather a traditional, accurate retelling as opposed to a creative iteration with some deviations from source material, this might not be for you. There are frequent twists and modern dialogue that includes, shockingly for some, swearing. However, it is extremely well-produced, with a superb cast that includes Guy Pearce, Stephen Graham and Charlotte Riley.
Gaelic Football Team of the decade - Eir Sport, 8 pm
The ultimate pub debate brought to your screen. An hour-long special determining the best Gaelic football XV from 2010 to 2019. To ensure a real visceral reaction, pick your own first and watch as they bafflingly opt against your obviously superior selection.
