We used to be assured a decent finish in the Eurovision every year back in the 1990s. In fact, given that we haven't won the competition in God knows how long, it could be argued that the 90s kid generation actually reached peak Eurovision in the early 2000s, with the phenomenon that was RTÉ's You're A Star.
The frenzy around the first season was incredible, the talent pool was actually pretty good and the drama brought us to the biggest showdown these shores have ever seen: Mickey Joe Harte vs Simon Casey. The seasons that followed got progressively more tame, with the latter incarnations not even rewarding the winner with the chance to represent Ireland at Eurovision. However it was still the Sunday night staple of many an Irish household, and whether it was through our own choice or that of the person in control of the TV (mammy), we couldn't escape it.
