It seems anything can be turned into milk these days and spuds are the latest to make the cut.

A supermarket in the UK will be welcoming 'potato milk' to their shelves for the first time and they expect many others to follow suit.

It'll be made available across 22o Waitrose stores, according to The Guardian, with the brand name Dug being the manufacturer behind the latest plant-based milk craze.

It's a multi-million euro industry now with the likes of soy, almond, and oat milk becoming the norm on shelves. It also allows those that are vegan to enjoy a milk substitute.

Dug is a Swedish-based brand and claims potato milk will produce 'the perfect foam' for a coffee and be 'deliciously creamy' for all intents and purposes.

Waitrose have an official 'alternative milk buyer' in their repertoire in Alice Shrubsall who scouted out the drink. She thinks buyers are getting more 'experimental' with their milk choices.

The Dug carton will contain a mixture of ingredients such as peas, rapeseed oil, and potatoes. They say growing spuds is more environmentally friendly than harvesting nuts.

What does it taste like? Apparently, not like much at all. It's being praised for its 'neutral' flavour, according to the Guardian, and goes well in hot drinks, cereal, or most popular dishes.

The Perfect Brand Ambassador

If Dug is looking for a dig out, they'll know to look to the Irish first given our potato heritage. If they're searching for an ambassador - look no further than Tadhg Furlong.

The world-class prop has grown an affinity for spuds as documented in an article in 2018 when we interviewed Leinster nutritionist Daniel Davey:

Tadhg Furlong loves his potatoes. So he might be having six potatoes or ten potatoes. So then, I have to say 'Tadhg, you're having too many potatoes'. You can do that the day of a game because potatoes are a good source of energy, but days you're sitting on the couch you're not going to need ten spuds.

He has a kind of potato addiction. Tadhg is somebody you can have fantastic conversations with, because he is from the country and he appreciates food. If you put good food in front of Tadhg, he'll enjoy it, and not just potatoes. But he's been in Dublin for a while now, so his palette has expanded!

Tadhg could be joined by teammates Andrew Porter and Ronan Kelleher in the marketing angle. The 2nd Row on Twitter gave them a very apt nickname.

'The Carvery' is a depiction of the indomitable Irish front row containing 'Spuds, Beef and Porter' which would strike fear into any opposition.

So, Dug, we have your brand ambassador, or ambassador(s). A few shots of 'The Carvery' drinking potato milk and you're on to a winner.
