The life of Craggy Island's most beloved housekeeper, Mrs Joan Doyle (it's still weird hearing the character referred to by her actual name) has always been something of a secret.
After all, she did start to tell us all about her husband but then she realised that she said too much. Aside from this, there's that time when she started to hallucinate from a lack of sleep, the moment when she mixed up cocaine and raisins, and her hatred of women that wear skirts.
Maybe this strange behaviour is a result of all those times she fell off the roof?
Anyway, McLynn will always be loved by the public for her role as everyone's favourite tea-obsessed housekeeper, but there's a long-standing rumour that the actress has always wanted to put some distance between herself and the character.
During a documentary on the history of Father Ted, McLynn didn't appear throughout the feature. This led to the creation of a rumour that the actress didn't want to be typecast as Mrs Doyle.
Well, during a recent chat with Ray D'Arcy to promote the new range of Father Ted stamps that are now on sale, the RTÉ host asked McLynn if she has made peace with the fact that she'll always be known as Mrs Doyle?
"Oh God, yeah. There was some rumour that I had a problem with Mrs Doyle. I saw recently someone had a go and said 'she wouldn't take part in the documentary they made about Father Ted.' Number one, it was a terrible documentary because I know the one they mean.
"Number two, I was working in a another country at the time and I wasn't free to do it. As a result, the company that made Father Ted were that hacked off that they put out that I chose not to be part of the documentary. Look it, I couldn't. So, I've had to live with that now for many years but the fact is I'm so proud of it, why wouldn't I be thrilled?," she said.
The actress then added that she would find it very strange if a day went by without someone saying "ah go on, go on, go on" or reciting one of Mrs Doyle's other iconic lines back to her.
Elsewhere in the conversation, the actress also said that she's very much in favour of having her iconic line "ride me sideways" included on any the 50th anniversary Father Ted stamps.
We live in hope.
