The trailer for new Irish drama God's Creature's, starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson, has just dropped.

The film is a co-production between Screen Ireland, BBC, and the critical darlings A24 Studios. Movies produced by A24 have been nominated for 25 Academy Awards and they won Best Picture in 2017 for 'Moonlight'.

God's Creatures is co-directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, with a screenplay from Shane Crowley and a story from Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly, who is an Irish film producer most known for her BAFTA nominated Lady MacBeth.

The film debuted at the Director's Fortnight at Cannes, which has also played host to recent Oscar nominees such as The Florida Project and Whiplash.

It was the second movie starring Paul Mescal to be shown at Cannes this year. He also plays the lead role in the highly anticipated Aftersun, which is also produced by A24.

God's Creature's was shot in Teelin, Co. Donegal, and follows the story of a young man in a remote Irish fishing village, whose mother has to conceal a dark secret to protect him.

“I am from a small fishing village in Ireland,” said Cronin O'Reilly in an interview with the Irish Times. “It is very personal material. So I had the world and all the characters and whatnot.”

“Well, our story is super specific for sure. But just because of how specific it is I feel it does have universal resonance – especially in regards to the psychology of the characters. They connected with that immediately. There’s no question about their connection to the material.”

With the release of the trailer for Martin McDonagh's upcoming feature The Banchees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, there is a brilliant few months of Irish movies to look forward to.
