It's the first of the month, and that means there's a boatload of new content arriving on Netflix. While there's a lot of exciting original Netflix programming that was uploaded today - such as the latest show from the man behind Money Heist and another season Dead To Me, there's also some new movies on Netflix this May Day that are worth your attention.
Here's our run-down.
Children of Men (2006)
Why to watch it: There's definitely a dystopian vibe to life these days, but Children of Men remains one of the most compelling films about a dystopian near future to be made this century. You'll know director Alfonso Cuarón from Roma and Gravity. An incredible film.
Blues Brothers (1980)
Why to watch it: A legendary American comedy film and the first movie to made from a Saturday Night Live sketch. There's some wonderful musical scenes and cameos from Ray Charles, Cab Calloway James Brown and Aretha Franklin.
Funny Girl (1968)
Why to watch it: One for fans of musicals. This is the movie that introduced Barbra Streisand to the world. Steisand won Best Actress for playing Fannie Brice, a 1930s comedian.
Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life (1983)
Why to watch it: A classic Monty Python film that asks the big questions about life and existence. It also features the best songs of any Python film, including 'Every Sperm Is Sacred'
Here's how Michael Palin explained the thinking behind the film back in 2013:
Having done The Holy Grail and Life of Brian, we found ourselves with a much bigger budget for The Meaning of Life. This meant we could spend an entire week on things like the sketch with Mr Creosote [the monstrously fat diner]. The sheer amount of minestrone used in the vomiting sequence was only possible because we were with Universal. That part was filmed at Seymour leisure centre in Paddington. On the morning after the final scene, in which Mr Creosote explodes and thousands of gallons of vomit get hurled against the walls, the room was all cleaned up immaculately – and, within 12 hours, two people were married in there. I wonder if they ever knew what had happened hours before.
