In recent years, Netflix has enjoyed success with the addition of titles in the gangster and Mafia genre to their library. For example, viewers were gripped by the events depicted in Precinct Seven Five which chronicled the trials and tribulations of the dirtiest cop in NYC history, Michael Dowd.
In terms of feature length films, Martin Scorsese's The Irishman was nominated for 10 Oscars and proved to be a massive hit for the online streaming giant in terms of viewership and critical acclaim.
Simply put, the formula works which is why Fear City: New York vs The Mafia looks certain to be popular when it arrives on Netflix on 22 July.
In terms of the events depicted, the three-part documentary is based on the Italian American Mafia with an extensive history in the US.
The feature explores the lives and crimes of five mob families in The Big Apple, who ruled with a bloody fist in the 1970s and 1980s. The mob ruled New York, until a group of federal agents tried the unthinkable: taking them down.
The five criminal empires in question are the Italian-American families formed by organised crime figure Salvatore Maranzano in 1931, the same year of his death.
The families later came to be known as the Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese families.
As the synopsis states: "With the full might of the FBI and an army of undercover agents, witness the bugging, the investigation, and the era-defining conclusion of the historic Mafia Commission Trial that changed everything."
The series is also created by the team behind the critically-acclaimed Don’t F*** With Cats.
Described as "the real-life Sopranos," we're certain that fans of David Chase's beloved drama will be tuned into Fear City: New York vs The Mafia when it's released on on Netflix from 22 July.
