People from outside this country can often struggle with the pronunciations of Irish words. That is understandable is some cases, with many of the spelling combinations used as Gaeilge a bit different to what you see in English.
We have all seen the videos online of people struggling to pronounce Irish names that we see as very straightforward. While it can be a bit condescending at times, you can see why people might find some of them difficult.
In saying that, we have never quite heard a place name be butchered like this.
Of all the towns and cities in Ireland, you would probably expect Limerick to be the easiest to pronounce. After all, the city shares the name with a humorous five-line poem, meaning the vast majority of English-speaking people would have come across it at some point.
That's what make this so baffling.
Love Island winner butchers pronunciation of Limerick
For those of you who are fans of Love Island, you will definitely be familiar with Ekin Su Cülcüloğlu. She won the show in 2022 alongside Davide Sanclimenti and is one of the most popular figures to emerge from the ITV series in recent times.
Ekin Su will be making her way to Ireland this week as part of her role as a brand ambassador for a cosmetics company, although the way she has pronounced the name of one of her destinations has garnered plenty of attention.
Sit back and listen to the way she pronounced the word 'Limerick' on her Instagram story.

We can honestly say that we've never heard anyone refer to it as 'lime-rick'.
Not knowing the pronunciation of the Irish city is one thing, but it is incredible how she has got to this point in her life without hearing of the poem that shares the same name.
Unsurprisingly, people found the whole situation pretty funny.

It’s so funny how the word Limerick isn’t just an Irish place so we can assume Ekin-Su has never heard a limerick before

Pretty funny.
Ekin Su would soon put up another post to apologise for the way she had previously pronounced Limerick.
This is how you apologise. Politicians take note pic.twitter.com/lKTHAWLvla

So here's an interesting fact. Apparently 'lime-rick' is called 'Limerick' in Irish and I just found out because of all my fans.
So I apologise, I said 'lime-rick' but it's 'Limerick'.
No harm done.
You can be certain that a few people will be mentioning this to her when she makes her way to the Treaty County.
