A controversial priest has been dominating public conversation once again today, producing a hardly believable performance on Liveline in order to defend ridiculous comments that he made over the weekend.
Fr Sean Sheehy hit headlines in recent days for disgraceful comments he made during a service St Mary’s Church in Listowel. During an address to the congregation, he said that gay couples were sinful, made disparaging comments about transgender people, criticised the introduction of abortion in Ireland, and slammed the HSE for handing out free condoms to young adults. A number of those in attendance would walk out after the comments were made.
The comments forced an apology from the Bishop of Kerry, with it being confirmed that the priest in question would not be allowed to say mass again.
However, that did not stop him from appearing on the national airwaves this afternoon.
Controversial priest appears on Liveline
Fr Sheehy doubled down on his recent comments during his appearance on Liveline, going on to get in a number of shouting matches with both presenter Joe Duffy and other callers.
He attempted to justify on his opinions on the gay and transgender communities by claiming that the scriptures of the bible forbid such things, from which point it didn't take long until he would spout a number of right wing conspiracies.
When Joe Duffy question the validity of such beliefs, Fr Sheehy said that the Liveline presenter was part of the 'left wing media agenda'. He would then go on to claim that the recent referendums in which Ireland legalised gay marriage and abortion were 'fraudulent' and that many of those cast their ballots did not realise what they were voting for. He continued to spout this nonsense when questioned by other callers.
In all, it was a crazy segment of radio.

Whoever lined up the ad where Shania Twain song "Man I feel like a woman" played in between the Sean Sheehy/Joe Duffy #Liveline debate deserves a raise.

#liveline today is absolutely wild!
This is honestly something else. Fr Sheehy is off his rocker. Joe Duffy is on fire.
The man is stating that all the referenda were rigged and that the Irish people were stupid and didn’t know how to vote.

I’m honestly stunned that Fr Sheehy didn’t spontaneously combust when the transgender woman came on #liveline

A trans woman just drove a bigoted priest off the air. Peak Liveline.#liveline

Well now Sheehy, I voted for divorce, I voted for marriage equality, I voted for a woman's right to choose. And, I'd do it again, now, away with you now for a touch self-flagellation!#liveline

Fr Sean Sheehy has now moved from screaming ‘listen to me’ at @BryanNewsatOne to screaming ‘listen to me’ at Joe on @rteliveline. ‘You typically media. You have your own agenda.’ The man is incapable of conversation. He just shouts & talks over people. #Liveline

When all is said and done, it's just creepy and bizarre that Fr Seán Sheehy and other clerics are so obsessed with what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes #liveline

The priest's recent mass and subsequent Liveline appearance reminded many of a famous scene from Father Ted, where Dougal was allowed to officiate a funeral to disastrous results.
Fr Sheehy was not the full-time priest in Listowel, filling in for the regular member of the clergy who was unavailable. It's fair to say that they probably regret that decision.

It's safe to say his day of saying mass are probably behind him.
