There are very few writers and directors whose work is so abstract, unique, and quirky that it can be categorised as something that only they could make.
Well, Charlie Kaufman definitely fits that description.
Having written the scripts for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, there are very few people with his unique vision.
In recent years, Kaufman has made a name for himself as a director with Synecdoche, New York and Anomalisa. Thankfully, he's back behind the lens with 'i'm thinking of ending things' on Netflix (even the decision to have the title in lower case is weird)
In terms of the plot, the film is an adaptation of Iain Reid’s acclaimed psychological horror novel. The official states: "Despite second thoughts about their relationship, a young woman (Jessie Buckley) takes a road trip with her new boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to his family farm.
"A man takes his girlfriend to meet with his parents, but they find themselves going on a terrifying detour. Trapped at the farm during a snowstorm with Jake’s mother (Toni Collette) and father (David Thewlis), the young woman begins to question the nature of everything she knew or understood about her boyfriend, herself, and the world."
After making a massive impact with Wild Rose and Chernobyl, it's great to see Irish actress Jessie Buckley continue her meteoric rise in this one.
As for the rest of the cast, well, Toni Collette is great in everything and Jesse Plemons is one of the most versatile actors around.
We're very excited to see what's in store when i'm thinking of ending things is released on September 4 on Netflix.
