Bank of Ireland have studied debit card expenditure from Irish people over the past month and revealed the data to RTÉ. The information says a lot about how are lives are changing in the age of the coronavirus.

Data was tracked from March 12. Among other things they found:

  • there has been a 37% increase in grocery shopping in Ireland
  • retail spending is down by 25% across the board
  • there has been significant increases in spending on clothes, electronics, household appliances and home fitness gear
  • there's been a huge increase in spend on gaming, with an increase of 122% in Playstation spend and an increase of 86% in Xbox spend.
  • Payment for streaming services is up 27%, with Disney+ playing a large role in this
  • Spend on travel has dropped more than 80%.
  • Restaurant expenditure is down 69%

This is all very interesting and indicate the radical shift towards a life spent indoors.
