With lockdown seemingly never-ending and the prospect of a lost summer ahead, there are a lot of things we're missing right now.

Unfortunately, it looks like we won't be able to attend gigs this summer. We'll miss everything about them - the outlandish outfits, ill-fitting and ill-equipped ponchos, and the prospect of having to carry four pints all while navigating past a million people.

The music is always there, waiting to be listened to, however.

We've talked about NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts before, and how brilliantly unique they are. Irish artists are no strangers to the NPR offices, with a plethora of acts performing in the strange environs.

Here are the five best Irish performances on NPR's Tiny Desk.

Hozier

We mentioned Hozier in our previous delve into the world of Tiny Desk, with the Bray native's performance still holding up to this day.

It's been a little over six years since Hozier's performance on Tiny Desk, but it's still unbelievable.

He offers stripped down versions of songs from his debut album - 'Take Me To Church', 'Cherry Wine' and 'To Be Alone'. He even forgoes the need for a separate bassist, instead keeping himself in check on his guitar. It's highly impressive and ultimately captivating.

Saint Sister

Considering it's our national symbol, it's only right that we involve a harp in our countdown.

The one overarching element of Saint Sister's music is that it is virtually impossible to keep the goosebumps at bay. The duo, from Derry and Belfast, create atmospheric soundscapes that can transform any room, never mind an editorial office.

Their four song performance from last summer contains the likes of 'Causing Trouble' and 'Is It Too Early? (Kilmainham)', two of the finest pieces of art to stem from Ireland in the last five years. Their music is space set to melody.

Dermot Kennedy

Usually, Tiny Desk is a stripped back insight into the engine of live music. Dermot Kennedy eschews that norm, instead enlisting the help of Washington's Howard Gospel Choir for his performance.

Not only that, but he flew out a day early to rehearse his three song set with the choir. Now that, everyone, is professionalism.

Of course, there's not much to say about Kennedy that hasn't been published. He showcases here that he's one of Ireland's best singer-songwriters, with emotive recitals of 'Moments Passed', 'An Evening I Won't Forget', and 'Glory'.

Lankum

If anyone needs a spot of good news, here's something for you - trad is back!

Lankum are at the fore of modern traditional Irish music, seen with their Irish Choice Music Prize win for their album The Livelong Day.

If you need to pretend you're in the boozer, stick this on for sheer ambience. Their haunting cover of 'The Wild Rover' is a particular highlight in this performance, as well as multi-instrumentalist Ian Lynch's Kneecap shirt.

The Cranberries

The earliest performance on the list, but it still remains one of the best Tiny Desks ever recorded.

The Limerick band dipped into the archives in order to create their set, coming together nearly 20 years since the release of their first album.

There's no doubt what the highlight is. Dolores O'Riordan's voice on 'Linger' still strikes a chord and tugs a heartstring to this day, it truly is a timeless anthem.
