The prequel is coming. Granted, that sentence doesn't quite carry the same amount of weight as it would if it was said the gruff tones of those living in The North, but it's still enough to get Game of Thrones fans excited.
While some viewers are still reeling from the weak final season, HBO is moving forward with their plans for House Of The Dragon, a new spin-off show that revolves around House Targaryen.
EW are reporting that the producers are already looking for cast members to star in the show.
While the roles haven't been specified yet, the show is based on George R.R Martin’s Fire & Blood book, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and revolves around House Targaryen — the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria as they take up residence on Dragonstone.
The novel begins with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and the person that subjugated the Seven Kingdoms.
The novel then recounts the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.
Over the course of the novel, the Dance of the Dragons, the Doom of Valyria and the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs are all discussed.
In terms of the show, it's likely that viewers will get to learn all about Aegon's Conquest of Westeros, The Wars of King Aegon I, the ascension of Jaehaerys I to the throne, the epic civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons and more.
Deadline previously stated that the show is being earmarked for release in 2022.
“My guess is sometime in 2022,” said HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys when asked about premiere date.
To make things even sweeter, Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter director Miguel Sapochnik will also direct the pilot and additional episodes of the new show. HBO has committed to 10 episodes of the first series.
Aside from Sapochnik, Ryan Condal (Colony) is also working on House Of The Dragon as a showrunner. Both men will also serve as executive producers, along with GoT co-executive producers Martin and Vince Gerardis.
