On first glance, tonight's offering of films on TV is very slim pickings. However, what's lost in quantity in actually made up for in quality with a better than usual selection to occupy your Wednesday evening. Stretching from early evening to late night, and with all genres covered, there's definitely something for you on the box tonight. And there's a special treat if you can stay up late enough...

As always, all of these films are available on non subscription channels, though may not be on all platforms.

 

Gremlins: 6.45pm, TCM (Virgin 327 Sky 315)

Year: 1984

Cast: Zach Galligan, Hoyt Axton, Frances Lee McCain, Phoebe Cates

Plot: A boy inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. (IMDB)

Little monsters, loads of craic. Still an absolute classic.

Brassed Off: 9.00PM, Film Four

Year: 1996

Gritty Northern England at its charming 90s best. Lots of laughs and passion. Never got the love or attention of The Full Monty, but possibly a better film.

Decent action thriller with some good chase scenes and ridiculous plot.

 

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior: 9.00PM, TCM

Recommended

Year: 1981

Cast: Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Michael Preston

Plot: In the post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, a cynical drifter agrees to help a small, gasoline rich community escape a horde of bandits. (IMDB)

Rating: 95% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Better than the original, and Mel Gibson at his best. You've seen this film 20 times but you know you'll watch it again tonight.

Baby Driver: 10.55PM, Sony Movie Channel

Year: 2017

Cast: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey

Plot: After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail. (IMDB)

Rating: 93% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Very good film, great ensemble cast, better soundtrack

 

Cabin In The Woods: 11.15PM, Film Four

Year: 2011

Cast: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison

Plot: Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods. (IMDB)

Rating: 92% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Classic "group of friends go to a house" horror.

 

Goodfellas: 11.25PM, ITV 4 (Virgin 132, Sky 2004)

Year: 1990

Cast: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco

Plot: The story of Henry Hill and his life in the mob, covering his relationship with his wife Karen Hill and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito in the Italian-American crime syndicate. (IMDB)

Rating: 96% (Rotten Tomatoes)

Nothing needs to be said. If you can stay up late enough, watch it. If you can't, don't watch a few minutes because you'll be sucked in.
