In exciting news for comic book fans and Irish movie fans alike, the upcoming spin-off of The Batman centred on Colin Farrell's character The Penguin has been green-lit by HBO Max.

The news was confirmed on Wednesday night, in the aftermath of the praise for the most recent Batman flick, in which Farrell played the iconic villain The Penguin. Farrell himself has received plenty of plaudits for his performance in the film, and fans will be eager to see more of the Dubliner on screen.

The Batman: HBO Max pick up Penguin spin-off series

Colin Farrell has received much praise for his performance as The Penguin (pseudonym for Oswald Cobblepot) in the newest DC Comics release, The Batman. Given how iconic the original cinematic performance in the role was from Danny deVito in Batman Returns, it is no mean feat for Farrell to have made his impact on the role.

The Irishman appeared in the film as one of the main villains, alongside Paul Dano in the role of the Riddler. The two iconic vices to Bruce Wayne's Batman played a crucial role in the film receiving the critical praise it has, with Robert Pattinson's iteration of the Dark Knight also receiving lots of plaudits.

The Batman currently holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72 MetaScore.

Farrell will reprise his role as The Penguin in an upcoming HBO Max Series. In even better news, the director of The Batman, Matt Reeves, will serve as one of the series' executive producers alongside Farrell.

The show had initially been announced in December, and has finally gotten the green light from HBO Max as the film continues to boom at the box office. Colin Farrell himself was thrilled with the news, saying in a statement:

I couldn't be more excited about continuing the exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become the Penguin.

It will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.

The Penguin is the furthest progressed of any of the planned spin-offs from The Batman.

Farrell's transformation for the role of The Penguin was quite something, with an incredible four hours of makeup application required before his transformation was complete. Co-stars Paul Dano and Jeffrey Wright confirmed that they did not realise Farrell the first time they saw him in his makeup.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in the leadup to the film's release, Farrell said:

When I saw what I would look like in the film...I didn't know when I signed on that that was the direction we were going in. I did a makeup test in Burbank a few months before shooting and it was so much fun.

If Colin Farrell's new series The Penguin is anywhere near as good as his appearance in The Batman, we're in for a treat.
