It's fair to say that ITV's Quiz has us yearning for the original edition of Who Want To Be A Millionaire. Aired in three parts on consecutive nights, the show recalled the story of Major Charles Ingram, who with the help of his wife and a fellow contestant, managed to cheat his way to the £1million jackpot back in 2001.
It has proven to be a huge hit, with the performances of Michael Sheen and Matthew MacFadyen drawing massive praise.
While some have doubted if Ingram had actually cheated, watching footage from the original show would seem to leave little doubt that something dodgy was going on.
However, he has always maintained his innocence.
With his win back in the spotlight in recent days due to Quiz, he saw it as an opportunity to testify his innocence once more. He did so by launching a bizarre tirade against Chris Tarrant on Twitter.
In a number of tweets, which seem to have now been deleted, Ingram claimed that the host did not believe he was cheating at the time, and only changed his mind after the fact in order to 'protect his legacy'.
We were good until he was told otherwise. Tarrant wants to protect his legacy, his team, and the integrity of the UK production.
I get that, but there is the more important issue of justice..., including all public that spent millions phoning and appeared. Who protects us?
Ingram was convicted in court and given a suspended sentence, but he feels he was set up to fail from the outset of the trial. He actually believes that Tarrant should have been a witness for the defence, and that the host has 'notions of grandeur':
Tarrant should have been a defence witness.
I think he's proven he will do anything to protect his legacy, the famed UK production and his 'family' regardless of what they have done...
Tarrant is not the person people think he is. TV does that.
He suffers from delusions of grandeur and despite no proof I cheated he keeps harping on to protect his mates.
I'm sad for him. p.s., I'm still calm.
Apart from arguing that the whole cheating thing was false, Ingram seemed to otherwise enjoy Quiz.
He still reckons he's going to get his own way in the end.
