Betty Moody received a rapturous welcome when she returned to her home in the north Kerry village of Moyvane on Tuesday evening.
The 96-year-old had spent two weeks in hospital in Kerry after she contracted Covid-19.
Despite her age making her more vulnerable, Betty overcame the illness.
"I was very worried because I had been with her in the days prior to her being sick," Frances Leahy, a local woman who organised a homecoming for Betty, told Radio Kerry.
"On the morning that she was taken to the hospital, the nurse was here and she said, 'Betty is very, very sick, if you'd like to go in and say goodbye to her'. That was a very testing moment."

People of the village lined the streets upon Betty's return.
"In such a hard time, it was absolutely fantastic," said Frances Leahy.
"All the neighbours were absolutely brilliant. Once it was said to them, they just all lined the streets. It was a marvellous occasion for the parish and it was uplifting."
