One of the highlights of Paddy's day every year is the parade. It's a time of year people in Ireland gather onto the streets and celebrate Irish culture, music and have a bit of fun as well.

As the years have gone by the parades have become whackier and whackier and the power of social media has allowed the more weird parade moments to be shared online for everyone to see.

Here are just a few of our favourite St Patrick's day parade floats and moments from 2024.

Ever wondered if the residents of Sesame Street celebrate Paddy's Day? Well there's no need to ask that question anymore as Michael Fry shared video evidenec of Sesame Street's own Big Bird riding a mini quad bike in Rush, Co.Dublin. Watch Big Bird pop a wheelie too.

Celebrating the wildlife of Ireland was a theme across many parades today. Aughrim in Wicklow decided to celebrate our animal friends by letting a gaggle of geese lead St Patrick himself down the parade.

Another type of bird was celebrated at the Dublin parade in an odd fashion.

Dublin celebrated its famous seagulls, however unlike Aughrim chose not to have the birds themselves in the parade but people dressed up as them. It led to what could be a nightmare for some as human sized seagulls roamed the streets of Dublin.

The St Patrick's day parade is also time to make jabs at local rivals. Inter-county rivalry is rampant in GAA and one of the biggest ones is between Galway and Mayo. At the Abbeyknockmoy parade in Galway a float was made by those from the Monivea-Abbey club to poke fun at their Mayo rivals Kilmeena.

This rivalry sprouted up last year before the two sides were set to face off in the Connacht IFC semi-finals and Monivea coach Francis Roche called out the 'cocky' Kilmeena side ahead of the game in a radio interview that went viral.

Monivea won the proceeding match and so for the parade at Abbeknockmoy they decided to make a final joke at the expense of their mayo counterparts. It's what we love about GAA.
