'The customer is always right' is one of capitalism's most wrong maxims. As anyone who's ever worked retail can attest, the customer is quite often wrong, although that doesn't stop them from acting with impunity. It's ultimately the job of badly-paid workers to carry the can for the global behemoths of capitalism, and deal with customers on the coal face.
Baltimore comedian Scott Saiss has become a viral comedy star in the past few weeks with his sketches of an IKEA employee who can't help himself from speaking his true feelings to customers. It doesn't sound funny, but when the dramatic music drops and Saiss looks down the camera lens with rage in his eyes, what we get is internet comedy gold. These videos perfectly capture the stupidity of shoppers and the simmering and mostly unspoken anger that retail workers have to carry around with them.
For example:
Customer: 'You working hard or hardly working?'
IKEA employee: 'I'm hardly laughing. I'm already at work. I don't have time for a second job pretending you're funny'
The videos have been viewed been over twenty million times on TikTok since February. Yesterday Saiss was kind enough to share all of his IKEA videos on Twitter. compiled on two videos.
