Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers are Ireland's favourite celebrity couple of the past few years, with the former Kildare minor footballer (and star of Normal People) dating the award-winning American singer-songwriter since the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020.
Rumours have swirled since the beginning of this year that the pair were engaged, with Mescal and Bridgers also reportedly eyeing up a home in Schull, County Cork.
The rumour mill had gone somewhat quiet on the couple's rumoured engagement - that was, until lead singer of The 1975 Matty Healy - who is a good friend of Phoebe Bridgers - appeared to accidentally confirm the news in a tweet on Tuesday night.
Matty Healy speaks out on Paul Mescal - Phoebe Bridgers rumours
Matty Healy has risen to fame as the frontman of The 1975, whose fifth studio album Being Funny In A Foreign Language is set to be released on October 14.
He is close friends with Phoebe Bridgers, whose 2020 album Punisher was nominated for four Grammys, and the pair collaborated on a song on The 1975's most recent album Notes On A Conditional Form.
Given their close friendship, you'd imagine Healy would know a bit about Phoebe Bridgers' relationship with Paul Mescal - which is why the internet was sent into a frenzy when Healy appeared to inadvertently confirm their engagement on Twitter on Tuesday.
I wanna be Phoebe Bridgers. Imagine being such a lesbian icon that you just get engaged to the sexiest straight man on earth. Truly a based god

When the post was swamped with replies and questions from fans of Mescal and Bridgers, Healy appeared to try and wade back on his comments - but insisted his faith that the pair would eventually get married.
I only heard the same rumours as you don’t get dramatic!! But I mean….it’s gonna happen https://t.co/JA3wV7E8PN

The comments from Matty Healy will only add to the media frenzy surrounding Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers - if they do end up making the move to Schull, perhaps the residents of West Cork will have to prepare themselves for a wedding in the coming months.
