The Gardaí have today released figures on the extent of breaches of Covid-19 legislation that was brought in earlier this month.
While the vast majority of the public has obeyed the lockdown orders, there have been a few notable exceptions over the past three weeks.
Gardaí have made 76 arrests in regards to the Covid-19 legislation. They've reported 31 incidents of being spat at or cough at by members of the public and they say anti-spitting equipment was used 15 times.
"I know this has been difficult for people, but it is critical this high level of compliance continues," said Commisioner Drew Harris.
"Unfortunately, there are people who did not adhere to the guidelines and members of An Garda Síochána had no option but to use the regulations or other legislation. It should be stressed though that this is a tiny proportion of the people we have engaged with over this time."
"It is vital that we protect their health and safety. This includes having the option of using anti-spit guards in very limited circumstances," Mr Harris said.
760 arrests were made during Covid-19 operations, pertaining to other offenses such as drink driving, drug and public order offences.
Operation Fanacht was brought in again this morning and will be in effect across the Bank Holiday weekend as the government pleads with the public to keep up the good fight against Covid-19.
