Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has this evening said that the lockdown will be extended for a further three weeks, until Tuesday May 5.
Ireland had originally entered a state of lockdown up to April 12. It was widely expected that the lockdown would be extended today. We now have certainty on how long the lockdown will be extended for: three more weeks, past the May bank holiday.
Education minister Joe McHugh confirmed that schools would remain closed in this period. The Leaving Cert has been deferred until late July.
Varadkar quoted Seamus Heaney and issued the following final message to the Irish public: "Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay home. "
