The Hopman Cup, a team-based international tennis tournament similar to the Davis Cup but with mixed-gender teams, is currently taking place in Perth, Australia, and a mens singles match between Lleyton Hewitt and Jack Sock has produced a truly satisfying moment of sportsmanship.
With Hewitt at the service line, the umpire made an incorrect judgment on the first serve, calling it 'out', which was taken without issue by the Aussie. Rather than accept this advantageous mistake, 26th ranked ATP pro Jack Sock, representing the USA, let Hewitt know that the serve was 'in', and suggested he challenge the decision.
Hewitt was taken aback by the idea, and despite the umpire accepting Sock's concession of the point, he insisted that he use a challenge as originally suggested, much to the delight of the crowd in attendance.
That's great to see.
Hewitt would go on to win the match 7-5, 6-4, as Australia defeated the USA by a score of 3-0, but the incredibly cheesy thing to say here is that the sport of tennis was the real winner.
