Novak Djokovic eased to yet another Wimbledon third round on centre court yesterday, as he chases a record equalling eighth title and a calendar year Grand Slam.

The Serbian defeated Australian Jordan Thompson with a straight sets win (6-3,7-6,7-5), and will face the winner of  today's game between Argentinian Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Djokovic's old foe, Stanislas Wawrinka.

Djokovic has never been particularly popular with the partisan Wimbledon crowd, a relationship that was most famously on display during Djokovic's epic defeat of the beloved Roger Federer in the 2019 final.

During the match winning point in yesterday's game, the relationship was again on full display as the crowd could be heard cheering with delight, as they were sure Thompson was about to win the point with Djokovic on the back foot.

However, as we have seen a thousand times before, the best returner in the game managed to get the ball back over the net and ended up winning the point and the match, before putting his hand behind his ear and staring down the crowd.

"I don’t know if I wanted to meet [Thompson] this early in the tournament. Congratulations to him for a great performance," said Djokovic after the match.

"He was unlucky in second set, he had some chances, he played a great match and he deserves a big round of applause for sure.

"Centre Court has been the most special court, without a doubt, for our tennis history. We know the tradition, know how long Wimbledon dates back.

"It sounds like a cliche but I truly try to marvel and enjoy every moment on this court. It’s a huge privilege, especially at this age and stage of my career to try and push forward with the young guns. I don't know how far and long that is going to take but so far so good.

"We have a very romantic and special relationship, this court and I."
