The name Nicolas Mahut might be familiar to some tennis fans. The answer to the pub quiz question of who was the loser of the longest tennis match ever when he lost to John Isner in Wimbledon by 70-68 in the fifth set after four days made a name for himself for a different (and more succinct) reason yesterday.

The French player was competing in the doubles event of the US Open, where he and his compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert upset the no. 3 seeds to advance to the semi-finals.

During the game, however, Mahut decided to chase a lost cause. Faced with a potential painful collision with the barriers, Mahut jumped up and into the crowd - as you do. The crowd went wild with polite tennis applause for Mahut's determination, quick thinking, and craftiness for attempting to get out of the court before it goes to a fifth set.
